Craig Shanahan

Cancer took his eyes. He built an award-winning cafe anyway. Now he tells that story on stages across Australia.

The Blind Chef Who Refused to Quit

At age two, cancer took Craig's left eye. At 23, a brain tumour damaged the optic nerve in his right — leaving him with just 6% vision. Legally blind.

Most people would stop there. Craig completed his Commercial Cookery qualification at TAFE NSW, spent 15 years in Sydney's top restaurant kitchens, and in 2021 opened The Blind Chef Cafe & Dessert Bar in Penrith — an award-winning, fully accessible cafe with menus in Braille, large print, and voice-output tablets.

He won the inaugural Blind Australian of the Year — Employer of Choice Award in 2022. His story became a children's book — Cooking Up a Storm, published by Simon & Schuster as part of Vision Australia's Big Visions series.

Now Craig brings that same energy to stages across Australia. No scripts. No fluff. Just a real bloke with a real story that changes how people think about barriers.

Speaking Topics

Breaking Barriers

From losing his vision to building a business — Craig shares what it actually takes to back yourself when the odds are stacked against you. No theory. Lived experience.

Accessibility is Smart Business

Craig built a cafe where everyone could eat — Braille menus, voice tablets, accessible design. He won a national award for it. Accessibility isn't charity. It's competitive advantage.

Resilience & Reinvention

COVID lockdowns. Staffing crises. Surgery. Craig's cafe closed in 2023. Instead of quitting, he pivoted. Your next chapter might be your best one — if you're willing to start again.

What Your Audience Walks Away With

Craig doesn't just tell a story. He shifts how people think.

A New Definition of Possible

If a legally blind man can run a commercial kitchen and win a national award, what excuse does anyone else have? Craig reframes limits.

Practical Accessibility Thinking

Not theory. Craig shares exactly how he made his business work for everyone — Braille menus, voice tablets, inclusive hiring. Takeaways your team can use Monday morning.

Permission to Start Again

Craig lost his cafe, his health, and his sight. He started over every time. Your audience leaves knowing that setbacks aren't endings — they're setups.
